The Stairway to Heaven via ferrata leading to the summit of Großer Donnerkogel is a true bucket list experience. The most iconic section is the sky ladder — a 40-meter crossing suspended over a 700-meter drop. Reaching the summit rewarded us with incredible views of the Austrian Alps.

We chose to hike up rather than take the gondola, avoiding the summer crowds. The trail was steep but manageable, and it took just over an hour to reach the start of the via ferrata. From there, the climb became more technical, with some thrilling traverses and stunning alpine scenery.

For the descent, we opted for a different route, forming a partial loop on the way down. After the climb, a refreshing swim in Gosau Lake was the perfect way to end the day.
