Online scams have become a daily reality for social media users worldwide. From misleading text messages to AI-generated deep fakes, scammers are coming up with increasingly sophisticated ways to trap victims on online platforms. More troubling, however, are allegations that the big tech companies are profiting from these online frauds. After reviewing internal Meta documents, Reuters has reported that the company earned nearly $16 billion in revenue in 2024 by running online ads for scams and banned goods. With even big tech giants failing to prevent the ‘epidemic’ of online scams – and in some cases even allegedly benefiting from it – can anything be done to stop it?
