This interview explores his personal musical journey, the role of the psaltis, the evolving responsibilities of the teacher, the meaning of authentic style, and the influence of technology on psaltic formation. Through his experiences and reflections, Mr. Patras offers valuable insight into how a chanter matures, not only through theoretical study, but through lived liturgical experience on the analogion.
About the guest:
Mr. Petros Patras is one of the most respected and inspirational figures in contemporary Byzantine chant. Born in Tholopotami, Chios, he grew up surrounded by the sounds of Byzantine music, studying under notable teachers such as Petros Deleres, Nikolaos Chatzistamatis, Christos Chatzinikolaou, and Manolis Chatzimarkos. His dedication led him to earn both his Byzantine Music Degree and Diploma with highest distinction.
With decades of service as Protopsaltis and Lambadarios in churches across Chios and Athens, Mr. Patras has spent over 20 years serving at St. Thomas, Ampelokipoi, alongside the renowned Archon Protopsaltis Theodoros Vasilikos. Their collaboration is widely considered one of the most iconic duos in modern psaltic practice.
Beyond liturgical service, he has contributed to recordings, broadcasts, international concerts, and has played a vital role as a teacher at the International Conservatory of Athens. He is deeply committed to passing on the musical and cultural heritage of Byzantine and Greek traditional music to the next generation.
