Dear Grandpa,
It's hard to find the right words to express the depth of my feelings as I write this. Your unexpected passing has left a void in my heart, but I find solace in the countless memories we've shared, memories that have shaped me and will forever be a part of who I am. We've watched your thoughts get more obscure with every passing day. It's been a long journey watching this disease strip away the gleam from your eyes and your vibrant personality. It felt so unjust for such a giving man to suffer in this way. Yet, even through the tears and the heartache, we tried to find meaning in the long goodbye.
Now, as you are finally free from this cruel disease, we pledge to remember the man you once were. A good-hearted, giving man is all that will be heard when we speak of you.
You were an innovator long before it was recognized. I remember the incredible Christmas displays you created, always ahead of their time. You and Grandma transformed your home, inside and out, into "The House of Lights." It was always a family affair with all hands on deck putting up the outdoor lights. Everything was meticulously placed. You may or may not be the reason I am a little judgmental when it comes to Christmas lights. You had a talent for inventing things before they became mainstream; we should have been the rich Calcaterra’s, you'd always say. Your ingenuity and creativity were unmatched, and you always inspired me to think outside the box.
Along with the inside and outside decorations, you dressed up as Santa Claus for all the neighborhood children the week of Christmas. Despite working all day, you would put on the red suit and stand in the cold, dancing away to the carols blaring from the loudspeaker on the porch, with a twinkle in your eye.
Your patience, love, and kindness were evident in everything you did, and these qualities helped shape the man I am today. The lessons you taught me about being a man, even the ones you might not have realized you were teaching, have helped mold me into someone I think turned out pretty okay.
You and Grandma’s love story was a musical one, always dancing to the oldies and singing your hearts out. This love for music passed to my mother and then to me. Whenever I hear "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," I can’t help but imagine you harmonizing with the angels. Your love for music, and the joy it brought, will forever echo in my heart.
You had a unique way of making us laugh. You were always trying to be hip, attempting to create secret handshakes, and then just giving me a big bear hug instead. Those embraces, which I might have taken for granted, now mean the world to me.
In those memories, and so many more, you will live on. Every night, when we look up and see a certain star, we will know that you are up there with your harmonica watching over us.
As I share my rendition of "Dancing In The Sky," the song's lyrics resonate deeply with how I feel about your passing and the peace I hope you have found. I can't help but imagine you happy, more alive, dancing in the sky, free and joyful.
With all my love,
-Case
