A devastating fire tore through a packed New Year’s Eve party at Le Constellation bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, killing around 40 people and injuring more than 100.
Fire security expert Olivier Burnier says the tragedy should not have happened if Swiss safety regulations had been respected. According to Swiss law, venues hosting large crowds must have multiple emergency exits and must not contain flammable materials in plain sight.
Burnier explains how a combination of overcrowding, inadequate exits, and highly flammable materials may have contributed to the disaster, and why fires in enclosed basement spaces can escalate rapidly.
As investigators work to identify the victims, vigils are being held across Switzerland to honor those who lost their lives in one of the country’s deadliest nightclub fires in years.
