An aerial view of the reclaimed Rajasthan desert from a voracious Mexican plant - the Prosopis juliflora or Vilayati keekar / mesquite.
Raja Umaid Singh of Marwar brought in the Mexican plant for timber and fodder. However, the Kikar plant or Prosopis juliflora can grow even in the crevices of hard volcanic rocks on little bits of moist soil and it outcompetes and chokes all vegetation.
To overcome this the native of Rajasthan have been working for the past 10 years to reclaim the Rajasthan desert from this soil diminishing plant. Over these years they have planted babul, jaal and actual kikar to strengthen the soil and bring back Rajasthan's native plants back.
