D2246 prepares for action at Totnes Riverside Station on the South Devon Railway.
The shunter was about to haul a service back to Buckfastleigh during the railway's Diesel Gala.
Shunters are small locomotives dedicated to moving carriages and other stock around yards and sidings, preparing them for longer journeys led by larger engines.
D2246 is a British Rail Class 04 loco that was built in 1956.
Originally numbered 11216, it worked for BR until its withdrawal in 1968.
The loco was sold to the National Coal Board and worked at several coal yards and distribution centres until 1994.
It was stored in Sheffield until it was bought by the Devon Diesel Society in 2001.
D2246 returned to action on the SDR in 2024 following overhaul and repair.
