Catherine Bennell-Pegg, an astronaut from Adelaide, has been named Australian of the Year for 2026, whilst Olympic champion Cathy Freeman receives a Companion of the Order of Australia. Other award recipients include dementia researcher Harry Brodaty as Senior Australian of the Year, Indigenous employment advocate Frank Mitchell as Local Hero, and endurance runner Ned Brockmann as Young Australian of the Year. The ceremony took place in Canberra, with recipients set to join the Prime Minister for Australia Day celebrations.
