With the new Shay steam locomotive, a very unusual chapter in locomotive history has entered the fascinating world of model railways.
Since 1873, the massive Shay steam locomotives have been delighting with their revolutionary technology - by 1945, around 2,770 of these robust machines had been built to deliver maximum traction even on rough, steep and winding routes. Originally designed to work in remote forest areas and in mining where conventional locomotives failed, they could easily handle even 10% gradients and tight curves. The Western Maryland Railway used the 136-ton Shay No. 5, which was later replaced by the even more impressive Shay No. 6. This still transports tourists through the rugged mountains of West Virginia today. These steam locomotives combine adventure and technical sophistication - a fascinating chapter in industrial engineering that continues to delight today.
