Daylight Saving Time: A Brief History

Описание: Daylight saving time - love it, hate it, or don't understand it - this is why we change our clocks twice a year.

People Spring forward one hour in the Spring and Fall back an hour in the Autumn, causing a lot of overtime for clock shop owners - changing each and every one of those clocks one by one.

The idea is to provide more daylight during the evening hours in the Summer.

At least that's what New Zealand entomologist George Vernon Hudson wanted when he proposed a TWO hour shift in the clocks because he wanted more evening daylight to collect bugs.

And for those of you who HATE changing your clocks, be glad William Willet's idea didn't take off. He suggested setting our clocks ahead by 20 minutes every Sunday in April and then switching them back 20 minutes at a time every Sunday in September - eight time changes a year!

Ben Franklin argued we change our clocks to conserve energy - candles in those days. And Germany put that theory to test during World War I when they were the first to implement daylight saving time. They thought they could save more on coal during World War I by changing their clocks, and that's just what they did in April 1916.

Between then and now, it's gone back and forth a number of times, and studies have gone both ways as to whether or not it saves energy.

But we do have more daylight during the evening hours - at least according to our clocks.
