Alumni Advice: Magnus Larsson

Using examples from their own careers, invited Alumni will discuss the opportunities that emerge in times of adversity and how to build a resilient practice to ensure longevity and sustainability. Each session is followed by a Q&A chaired by a recent graduate or student.



Magnus Larsson is a Stockholm-based architect whose practice focuses on architecture and urbanism at the intersection of evolutionary computation and architectural materiality, fuelled by theories about anticipation and adaptation. His 2009 TED Talk on his AA Diploma project Dune – Arenaceous Anti-Desertification Architecture has been viewed over 750,000 times and won the Next Generation 1st prize at the Holcim Awards. Larsson also co-founded the London studio Ordinary Ltd, which was the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the AA in 2014. His 2020 PhD thesis at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology is entitled Evolutionary Materialism: Towards a Theory of Anticipatory Adaptive Assemblages, and his latest project is a 350m2 private residence designed using genetic algorithms, to be constructed in 2021.
