France has officially changed how it treats extreme speeding, making it a criminal offence as of December 29, 2025. That means exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/h anywhere in France can land you in court, with the possibility of up to 3 months in prison and a €3,750 fine. This is no longer a simple traffic ticket — it’s a délit (criminal charge) that can leave you with a criminal record and serious legal consequences.
Along with the fine and jail time, drivers can face license cancellation for up to 3 years, immediate loss of points, vehicle seizure, driving bans, and mandatory safety training at their own cost. The law is a direct response to a massive rise in extreme speeding cases—over 63,000 incidents recorded before the law took effect, nearly 70% higher than previous years. This shows the government is taking high-speed driving much more seriously than before.
France is not alone in this crackdown. In the US, states like Virginia treat extreme speeding as reckless driving, which can result in jail, fines, and license suspension. Georgia’s “Super Speeder” law imposes heavy penalties for driving at extreme speeds, and Nevada can charge drivers criminally if they exceed the limit by 30 mph or more. The global trend is clear: extreme speed is increasingly treated as a dangerous criminal act, not just a traffic mistake.
If you love speed, this is a wake-up call. Governments worldwide are shifting to harsher penalties backed by real safety data, and your next speeding moment could cost you everything.
