Epsom Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Описание: Located in the county of Surrey, and around 15 miles southwest of central London, is the town of Epsom.

The first written reference of Epsom dates back to the 10th century when it was recorded as 'Ebesham', presumably named after a Saxon landowner named Ebba.

For centuries, Epsom was a small rural community. This began to change in around 1620 with the discovery of local water rich in magnesium sulphate, later known as Epsom Salts. Many people flocked to Epsom during the period that followed as it was transformed into a spa town.

At its height many prominent 17th century figures took the waters at Epsom. King Charles II became a regular visitor, as did a number of writers of the time such as Samuel Pepys and John Aubrey. The popularity of the spa declined during the 1720s owing to competition from other spa towns and cities such as Bath and Tunbridge Wells.

At some time during the early 17th century a racecourse was built on Epsom Downs about a mile and a half south of the town centre. In 1779 Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby, organised a race for himself and his friends, naming it the Oaks after his nearby estate. After the race was won by one of his own horses, he decided to start another annual race in Epsom, naming it the Derby. Since then, the Oaks and the Derby have been held annually in Epsom, and make up two out of the five British Classics of flat racing; the other three being the 2,000 Guineas and 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket, and the St Leger at Doncaster.

Famous people from Epsom include TV and radio presenter Jeremy Vine and actors Warwick Davis and Andrew Garfield (although Garfield was born in Los Angeles).
