Southampton Maybush - Observation Links (Eyes On The Road)

Описание: In this video I drive through some key areas of Southampton Maybush (Shirley High Street, Docks Multi-Lane, Millbrook Roundabout, Lordshill, General Hospital, Romsey Rural, etc) following the changes to The Highway Code introduced on 29th January 2022 (Changes to The Highway Code video:    • Changes to The Highway Code: hierarchy of ...   ).

The key focus is on improving Observation skills, also Observation-Links i.e. the things we could reasonably anticipate happening based on what we can and can’t currently see. These Observations & Links then inform our Driving Plan. An evolution of the basic Hazard Perception skills you started to develop for the DVSA Theory Test. Strong all round Observation Skills are more important than ever for drivers with the increased onus of responsibility placed on drivers, and new priorities given to other road users in the ‘Hierarchy of Road Users’ post 29th January 2022. Observations inform the Judgement the driver then makes to apply the guiding principles of The Highway Code to the prevailing dynamic situation.

* IMPORTANT: As with all driving videos, the decisions I make during this drive were made within the context of what was happening around me at that moment in time. Doing ‘the same thing’ in a different dynamic context may be inappropriate or even unsafe, and thus viewed accordingly on a Driving Test. Judgements around appropriate speed, road positioning, signalling, etc, will all ‘depend’ on what is happening around you at any given moment - proximity of other road users, weather conditions, etc. The Highway Code gives drivers the guiding principles which they must then use their own judgement to apply within the ever changing situations of road driving * *

During the drive I give a very BASIC ‘Spoken Thoughts’ Commentary where I try to describe what I am looking at, and the implications for my driving plan. Given the limitations of the camera’s range, & my predominantly L-Driver audience, I try to limit my comments to things which would be reasonably near-distance. As a simple starting point, call out EVERY red triangle hazard sign you approach, check your MIRRORS, then look ahead for what the sign warns of; THINK, do you need to adjust your road position or speed? I don’t mention every sign during this drive as I am describing other points.

The Highway Code now places an onus of responsibility on us, when Pedestrian, to take care of both ourselves and other road users. The 2017 road safety campaign ‘You can’t even text & walk’ featured a selection of CCTV footage capturing “comical” mistakes pedestrians made when distracted by their phones.
