Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924)
Ave verum corpus, Op. 65 No. 1
Composed in 1894
Performed by the sopranos and altos of The Cambridge Singers and John Scott (1956-2015), organ
Recorded November 1984 at the Great Hall of University College, London
Gabriel Fauré composed this setting of the Ave verum corpus in 1894, originally written for two female voices and organ. Like many of his smaller sacred works, it was created during his tenure as the choirmaster at the Église de la Madeleine in Paris. The piece is notably brief and transparent, reflecting the composer's preference for understated elegance over the dramatic religious fervor typical of the late Romantic era. On this recording, it appears as the first of three motets published together as Opus 65, which also includes his Tantum ergo and Ave Maria. The work is characterized by a fluid, step-wise melody and a peaceful harmonic language that closely mirrors the intimate spirit found in the Pie Jesu of his more famous Requiem.
