It's commonly seen during first few months of life.

Skull facts to know:

Skull is made up of many bones and they aren't joined into one (as like in older children or adults).

This fusion of all takes about 12-18 months of life.

This is important because baby's head shape should be modifiable so that it can pass through mom's birth canal, also it helps the skull to adapt baby's rapidly growing brain volume.

The soft spot or uchi kulli also has significance - helps to know if there is increase in intracranial pressure by bulging/ also helps to do trans cranial ultrasound to look into in case of any perinatal asphyxia or as such.

Reason for flat head :

When baby lies in supine (on back for prolonged time) there is increased surface tension which leads to flattening of skull.

Remedy :

Frequent changing of position of baby is important especially before they roll over.

Since after they learn to roll over, naturally the tension decreases as babies adapt different positions (roll over, sitting, crawling,standing, walking).

So here the key point is remember to place them in prone position (on their tummy) give some supervised tummy time daily for few minutes.

Don't keep the baby in bed always, hold them now and then also you can use baby carriers as well.

Also traditional cradles (the one with cotton cloth) is best for initial few months as they don't cause any increase in surface tension and baby's head adapts to the natural round shape.

Don'ts ❌❌

Don't use a pillow for children below 2 years of age.

❗❗❗Remember there are other reasons for abnormal shape of head also, so before concluding it's positional plagiocephaly consult with your pediatrician once to be assured.

So most often this is correctable/curable naturally - except some cases where it will be difficult to correct (where the fusion has already occured or the degree of flatness is more)
