Named for the intersection of two major thoroughfares in its southern half, Cooper-Young is just east of Memphis in southwestern Tennessee. The area’s name defines its character: Cooper Street and Young Avenue help link the area’s bustling scene of shops and restaurants with its more residential side. Besides a trio of train tracks dividing the neighborhood horizontally, Cooper-Young is a suburban neighborhood with a central thoroughfare of local businesses bisecting it from north to south. “Cooper-Young has been growing for 25 years,” says Melody Bourell, a Realtor with Marx-Bensdorf. “It’s a core center, only a few minutes from downtown Memphis, and it’s very walkable.” With some historical roots tied to the path of streetcars there and even to Johnny Cash’s first performance, there’s plenty for residents to find after passing through the Cooper-Young Trestle, an ornate sculpture at the neighborhood entrance.

Early-20th-century homes with numerous styles
With a variety of home styles lining its shaded, tree-lined streets, many built in the 1910s and 1920s, Cooper-Young’s residential side typically ranges from about $200,000 to $350,000. A few properties have also sold for between $400,000 and $500,000. Bungalows are popular, and a wide variance of color choices – along with some murals scattered across the area – give the neighborhood a truly vibrant atmosphere. Some Victorian and Craftsman architecture, along with large porches and stone pillaring, can also be found throughout Cooper-Young.
