When Aristotle Onassis died in March 1975, his handwritten will gave Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis $250,000 a year, and said she would lose even that if she pressed any claim on his estate. She had already signed away her claims in a marriage agreement, and The Times of London reported that Onassis had the Greek civil code changed to make that agreement hold. After 18 months of talks, his daughter Christina paid her $20 million to walk away for good.
This is the money story of the marriage: the $34,000 navy hull that became the yacht Christina, the island of Skorpios bought for about $25,000, the allowance and the bills the columnist Jack Anderson reported in 1975, the will Onassis wrote by hand on a flight from Mexico to New York, the one sentence in it that left Jackie a way through, and what became of the yacht, the island and the fortune afterwards.
