Antonella Minutolo, professor at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, talks about the work carried out as part of the HERVCOV project, which focuses on the immune response in patients with Long COVID. The study revealed that, although lymphocyte counts may return to normal after the acute infection, the function of these cells remains impaired and “exhausted,” contributing to persistent symptoms. This prolonged immune dysfunction has been linked to the expression of human endogenous retroviruses (HERV-W).
The research group has not only carried out scientific investigations but has also devoted efforts to disseminating its findings and raising public awareness about issues related to Long COVID.
