Today we've arrived in Oklahoma City to catch Amtrak's Heartland Flyer. This is a train funded by the state governments of Oklahoma & Texas, the latter being the most recent (April 2025) source of cause for concern that this train may cease to operate due to budget cuts in Texas' new two-year budget. What's more, Kansas has just committed state funds toward expansion of the service to Wichita & Newton, KS! Let's muse on these developments & why passenger rail struggles when it's budgeted separately from state transportation budgets.
