In Spain you’ll find a ‘Churreria’ in every town, where these hot, crisp, doughnut sticks are served with rich hot chocolate.
No one knows the origin of Churros, but one common belief is that they originated centuries ago with Spanish shepherds. Sweet, baked goods wouldn’t last up the mountains, so the Shepherds created a delicious cake-like paste which could be cooked easily in a pan over an open fire.
The churros were originally eaten plain, or rolled in cinnamon sugar but, as they’ve become more and more popular, the range of dipping sauces has expanded to include dulche de leche, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla sauce and even cheese.
In Spain churros are often enjoyed for breakfast or for ‘Merienda’ – an afternoon snack. Churros are traditionally sold at ‘Churrerias’, and by street vendors, who fry them to order and serve them hot.
