Jonathan Stoltzfus’s capstone project explored the surprising presence of religious thought in the French salon tradition of the 18th and 19th centuries. Inspired by groups like the Inklings, Jonathan examined how literary and intellectual circles, especially the salons of figures like Madame de Staël, served not only as centers of Enlightenment and Romantic discourse, but also as forums for sustained engagement with questions of religion, transcendence, and Christian thought. Drawing on scholars such as Habermas and Goodman, he reinterpreted the salon not as a purely secular Enlightenment institution, but as a space where ideas of morality, God, and beauty were actively discussed by key thinkers like Germaine de Staël, Friedrich Schlegel, and François-René de Chateaubriand.
