With the 60th edition of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo just nine days away, Wrangler NFR qualifiers will be itching to make their best rides and quickest runs, possibly setting records in the process.
The Finals are in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center, Dec. 6-15.
Every point counts and a fraction of a second can mean the difference between winning the world or coming in second at the Wrangler NFR, which is why Round 1 presents some of the fiercest competition.
Trevor Brazile set the tie-down roping record for Round 1 with his 6.8-second run in 2015. That year, Brazile competed as a team roping header and in tie-down roping. Although he placed fourth in the average for tie-down roping, he went home with $126,078 for tie-down roping and won $89,693 in team roping with Patrick Smith.
Brazile’s grand total of $215,771 won in 10 days, coupled with winning the 2015 steer roping world title, granted him his 13th all-around title in 2015.
Brazile also holds the Wrangler NFR arena record for fastest tie-down roping time across all 10 rounds with his 6.5-second run in Round 8 in 2015. Cody Ohl also made a 6.5-second run at the 2003 Wrangler NFR in Round 10.
Brazile holds or shares six Wrangler NFR round records.
• Round 1 tie-down roping – 6.8 seconds in 2015
• Round 5 tie-down roping – 6.9 seconds in 2010 (shared with Cody Ohl, 2010)
• Round 6 tie-down roping – 6.6 seconds in 2015
• Round 6 team roping – 3.5 seconds with Patrick Smith in 2011 (shared by Colby Lovell and Russell Cardoza, 2012)
• Round 7 tie-down roping – 6.7 seconds in 2007 (shared with Ohl, 2013, and Matt Shiozawa, 2015)
• Round 8 tie-down roping – 6.5 seconds in 2015
