The Four Feathers (1929) is an American synchronized sound war film produced by Paramount Pictures, adapted from A. E. W. Mason’s 1902 novel. Directed by Merian C. Cooper, it stars William Powell, Richard Arlen, Clive Brook and Fay Wray
The film is notable for its large-scale battle sequences, extensive location photography, and emphasis on physical realism, reflecting Cooper and Schoedsack’s experience with expeditionary filmmaking. Though released just as sound cinema was becoming dominant, The Four Feathers was issued as a silent feature, with synchronized music and effects prepared for some theatrical presentations. As a 1929 release, it belongs to the American Pre-Code period, predating the enforcement of the Production Code.
The story follows a young British officer who resigns his commission under accusations of cowardice and sets out to redeem his honor by secretly undertaking a series of dangerous missions during a colonial military campaign.
