India will not be receiving full source code access to the Rafale fighter jet, but it will get meaningful operational access at a level that enables integration and customization within clearly defined boundaries. The distinction is important. The Indian Air Force will gain interface-level and application-layer access, but the core combat kernel of the aircraft will remain under Dassault Aviation's control.
This architecture-driven reality flows directly from how Rafale has been designed from the ground up.
Unlike legacy platforms such as the Mirage 2000, which were built around a largely monolithic fire-control system box, Rafale uses a fully distributed, partitioned avionics architecture. At the heart of the aircraft sits Dassault's MDPU, or Modular Data Processing Unit, which functions as a federated real-time computing backbone rather than a single mission computer.
