Birdwatching: Swallow-tailed Kites Soar Overhead
Our Swampstead is a birdwatching goldmine. Yesterday, we spotted Swallow-tailed Kites—big, graceful raptors—dancing in the sky above the wetlands. The AI’s 95% sure it’s them, and that split tail’s a dead giveaway; if not, still some kind of kite. Northeast Florida’s a sweet spot for their breeding and migration, so we’re right in their flight path. We peeked into ‘em after fretting over our critters—good news, these giants mostly snatch dragonflies mid-air or pluck lizards and frogs from the canopy. Our goats aren’t on the menu.
Those posted pics and the cell vid? They don’t do justice—these birds are huge, with four-foot wings and that forked tail slicing the breeze like a living kite. They’re raptors, sure, but more about finesse than hawk/eagle-style brawls.
Callahan and, NE FL in general keeps rewarding us—just glance up, and nature’s got something awesome to show you. Don't forget to look up now and again- you might see a parade of cardinals, raptors roosting, or gracefully gliding Gruidae such as storks and cranes.
