Wolf communication- Scrapes RLUs, summer 2026

Описание: Marking territory with urination-squat (SqU) or raised leg (RLUs) or flex leg (breeding female) and scrapes, are important communication activities for wolves. During winter tracking, RLUs and DRLUS (double RLUs-breeding male and female) are easy to spot-yellow snow usually on top of a raised surface-a snow pile, rock or small sapling tree. Scrapes are also simple to find. In summer moths TWIN is left to tracking in sandy areas in the central forest region to monitor wolves or by the use of our trail cameras. Here a pack is not using a typical linear trail or road for this camera deployment, but rather a "land bridge" between drainage ditches. These cross roads are great locations to detect wildlife as it funnels traveling animals thru a narrow spot where a camera can detect them. This site has recorded 27 different species including bear, of course, deer, otter, fisher bobcat and even elk.

This sequence of videos captured a lot of marking behavior which in this case, is a calling card for other wolves passing by. It's not at their territory edge so the purpose is more to communicate within the pack. If you have the volume up there is even some growling going on during the 6/26/26 clip.There are as many instances of RLUs and scrapes at night as well, so this is a very active area in a little over a months time period.
