Wisdom Togobo has spent most of his career helping Ghana rethink how it generates and uses power. One of his most notable milestones is helping bring to life the floating solar plant at the Bui reservoir, a first-of-its-kind project in West Africa. Instead of covering vast land space, the panels sit directly on water, turning an existing hydro dam into a hybrid power system that blends solar and hydropower. The idea is simple but powerful. Sunlight feeds the grid during the day, and when demand rises or clouds roll in, the hydro turbines pick up the slack.
Building the project took persistence. Togobo and his team had to run feasibility studies, explain the concept to stakeholders, coordinate energy regulators, and work with engineers to design structures that could withstand heat, wind, and waves. Today the plant feeds clean electricity into the national grid, while reducing evaporation from the reservoir and extending the life of the hydro asset.
Projects like Bui prove that Ghana can leap beyond traditional energy systems. Green power means fewer emissions, less reliance on expensive fuel imports, and more resilient supply for homes and businesses. Every new solar panel, wind farm, and battery bank keeps more money in the local economy and creates jobs for young engineers and technicians.
Ghana now stands at a turning point. Government, private industry, and citizens need to push harder for renewable energy adoption, support local innovators, and invest in training the next generation. Clean energy is no longer a future goal. It is the path to a stable, prosperous Ghana.
