Oregon State University Assistant Professor David G. Lewis, PhD, talks about the history of Tribes in Western Oregon as part of Fort Steilacoom's 175th Anniversary speaker's series.
At the start of the presentation, he talks about resettlement during the US pioneer era.
At 15:10 he begins the part of his talk titled Reconstructing Traditional Indigenous Environments in the Williamette Valley.
At 45:50 he begins answering a variety of questions from attendees.
The recording begins right as his talk started, so by way of introduction: David is a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, a descendant of the Takelma, Chinook, Molalla, and Santiam Kalapuya peoples of western Oregon. David has engaged in research on the tribal histories of Northwest Coastal peoples, specializing in the Western Oregon Tribes.
David served as the director of the Southwest Oregon Research Project Collection at the UO, and was the Culture Department manager of the Grand Ronde Tribe for 8 years and help design and create the Chachalu Museum. David has a PhD in anthropology from the University of Oregon (2009) and teaches full time in Anthropology and Indigenous Studies at OSU.
David also talked about his new book, Tribal Histories of the Willamette Valley (2023). Here's how the publisher describes the book: "The Willamette Valley is rich with history—its riverbanks, forests, and mountains home to the tribes of Kalapuya, Chinook, Molalla, and more for thousands of years. This history has been largely unrecorded, incomplete, poorly researched, or partially told."
"In these stories, enriched by photographs and maps, Oregon Indigenous historian David G. Lewis combines years of researching historical documents and collecting oral stories, highlighting Native perspectives about the history of the Willamette Valley as they experienced it."
This talk is one in a series organized as part of the 175th anniversary of the founding of Fort Steilacoom. The moderator is Walter Neary, past president of Fort Steilacoom. For more information: https://historicfortsteilacoom.org/
