Sahir Ludhianvi was born on 8th March 1921 in Ludhiana. He was a popular Urdu poet, Hindi lyricist and songwriter. Sahir Ludhianvi is his pseudonym, his real name was Abdul Hayee. Sahir studied at and graduated from Khalsa High School in Ludhiana. He was quite popular for his ghazals and nazms in the college.
His most famous love affair, however, was with Amrita Pritam, who became his most ardent fan.
On 25 October 1980, at the age of fifty-nine, Sahir Ludhianvi suffered a massive heart attack and died in the arms of his friend Dr R.P. Kapoor. He won the Filmfare Award twice, in 1964 and 1977, and in 1971 was awarded the Padma Shri.
