My First Vlog | Hirakud Dam | Pride of Western Odisha | Emotional & Budget Travel

I started my journey from Itapalli Bus Terminal and boarded Bus No. 210/203 to visit the pride of Western Odisha — Hirakud Dam. A simple budget trip, but a very powerful experience.
Hirakud Dam is one of the first major multi-purpose river valley projects built in India after independence. Constructed across the great Mahanadi River, it was completed in 1957 and is one of the longest earthen dams in the world. It was built mainly to control floods in Odisha, generate hydroelectric power, and provide irrigation to lakhs of acres of farmland.
Because of this dam, Western Odisha became fertile and agriculturally strong. It changed the future of this region forever.
But for me, this place is even more personal…
During the construction of Hirakud Dam, many villages were submerged under water. My own village, which once stood near the banks of the Mahanadi River, now lies beneath the waters of the reservoir. My family was displaced during that time. So standing there, looking at the vast water, I felt something deeper — pride, pain, history, and gratitude — all at once.
From Jawahar Udyan, I took the ropeway and went up to Gandhi Minar. From the top, I could see the entire region — Sambalpur, Hirakud, and Burla. The view was breathtaking. My goodness… it was peaceful, powerful, and unforgettable.
Nearby, you can also visit Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, but since I’m starting my journey on a budget, I decided to return home this time. Maybe in the next vlog. 😉
