In this introduction, we meet our host, Marie Rackham, see a list of the topics to be covered, and learn why punctuation is important: "When you can communicate your written thoughts clearly, you have a better chance of achieving success."

Marie begins with one of her "punctuation poems":

If you can see the sense of punctuation—
Those dots, and lines, and squiggles on the page;
You'll master any language situation,
And be applauded as a punctuation sage.

Then she explains that although there can be disagreement about punctuation, this is no reason for worry because her course will focus on the most basic and cozy ways to use punctuation marks. She also gives a brief history of punctuation, focusing on a simple example:

Billy Bob is here.

Notice, for instance, what happens if we add a single comma:

Billy, Bob is here.

The entire meaning of the sentence changes!

"The purpose of punctuation," Marie explains, "is to facilitate reading and writing by indicating the necessary pauses and inflections. The aim of punctuation is to clarify meaning and prevent misunderstanding."

She closes by inviting us to join her in her trusty Camino, to learn about punctuation marks at different places in her hometown, and offers another punctuation poem:

Punctuation marks
Are language traffic signs.
They tell you when to stop and start
And how to read the lines.
