Formation of Large Numbers
Direct Purpose:
To give the child the language of teen
To construct the numbers from 11 to 19
To distinguish each number for 1-9 as a separate entity.
To show the relationship of each separate number (1-9) to the number 10. Example: 19 is made of 9 and 10

9 ten bars
1 of each colored bead bars from 1 to 9
A box
A small felt protector
Presentation:
Introduction to the Color Beads
Invite a child
Introduce the activity and the material
Have the child bring the box with beads, you can bring the felt protector to the table and sit down.
Unroll the felt protector.
Open the box as usual manner and place it on top left of the protector.
Pick up the red bead and tell him that the red bead is one. Say: “this is one”
Pick the green bead and introduce it as two and count it and invite the child to count.
Do the same with the pink bead
Continue with three period lesson
When done
Let the child know that you are going to organize them as inverted triangle, start with one at the bottom
Take 3 more: Continue the same manner introducing 4,5,6
Continue introducing the color beads as the same manner for 7,8,9
If the child still interested after introducing 1-9
Take out the 10 tens beads and place them vertically, at the lower protector, separate from each other. Start from the left.
Close the box.
Remind the child about the tens, ask: what is this?
Take the red bead and place it next to the right of ten, starting from the top and say: this is eleven, ten and one is eleven
Together with the child counts the beads starting from the bottom.
Do the same for 12 to 13
Continue with three period lesson with this numbers: 11,12,13. For example: Count 11, point to 12, give me 11, count 13, make 12, make 13, make 11
If the child is successful and he still interested, move 11,12,13 to top side of the protector.
Take out 3 more ten and place them vertically on the protector
Close the box
When introducing the numbers, emphasize the word teen
Continue in the same manner until you reach 19
Invite the child to put them in order and read the numbers in order and backward
When the child finish, have him put away the material
Following Exercise:
Invite the child to write the numbers with small movable alphabet. Write in red the word teen. Ex: thirteen. Say that the word teen means 10. note: Eleven all in black.
Control of Error:
There is no control of error but the child ability to count.
