STORYLINE:
Senegal's only female candidate in the country's upcoming presidential elections has pledged to improve working conditions and training for young people, with a focus on women.
Speaking to The Associated Press ahead of the country's elections on March 24, Anta Babacar Ngom says that access to jobs will solve "50% of women's problems."
Babacar launched her campaign for the presidency in the suburban Dakar district of Pikine, one of the poorest areas of the city, where she was born.
Now the head of the largest poultry company in the country, Babcar says if elected she plans to champion women in the same way she claims to have done in business.
"As an industrial captain, I’ve helped a lot of women, financing them, training them, showing them more opportunities and those women are now the ones talking for me. They say, Anta Babacar has helped me in the past, so if she is a president, she will help more women," she said.
She is now pledging to create 5 million jobs for young people over the next 5 years with 2 million of those "dedicated to women."
In Senegal, women make up half the population but they live in precarious conditions and most of them don't go to school.
Ngom is hoping the large base of undecided women voters can help tip the balance in her favour in the upcoming elections.
