TEAM COVERAGE: Remembering fallen Lorain police officer Phillip Wagner

Описание: Members of the community gathered outside Lorain City Hall for a candlelight vigil in honor of Police Officer Phillip Wagner, who died Thursday after he and two of his colleagues were shot in an ambush attack.

Wagner succumbed to his injuries at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where Officer Brent Payne remains hospitalized with serious injuries. Officer Peter Gale was also shot in the hand and taken to Mercy Health – Lorain Hospital.

"We are here today in an incredible moment of grief, but also in a moment of unity," Lorain Safety Director Rey Carrion said. "We are standing here to show all of our men and women in blue that we stand behind them and that we love them, and that we are praying for them now and always so they can continue with their mission of doing a job that very little people choose to do."

Such prayers were led on Thursday by the Rev. Dan Divis (a Lorain police chaplain) from St. Mary's Parish and Pastor Troy Thompson of the Church on the North Coast. Mayor Jack Bradley and Acting Police Chief Michael Failing also spoke, with the latter sharing his personal recollections of what he called "a very hard day."

"I sat with Jess Wagner when she had to make the decision to pull the plug on her husband," Failing told the crowd. "She wants to thank everyone for being here. She's keeping to herself and keeping to her family, and she respects that everybody has been respecting her and allowing her to deal with this in her own way."
