It was one of the worst days of riding. Our first day in Nicaragua started with dealing with corrupt border officials for hours. Then, getting lost on volcanic, sand covered, backroads in 104-degree heat. The day led to tears from heat exhaustion and frustration from dropping the bikes over and over. We eventually, after my bike was stuck in deep sand, had to give up and take a break and sit on the side of the road till we could cool down and try and figure out the correct route. After talking to locals on the road, we learned that the google maps route we were following was wrong. Eventually, we made it to the city only to arrive at our hostel to learn that it's an extra 12 dollars a day for the A.C., and they shut the water off during the day. We had such heat exhaustion and dehydration without air conditioning or a cold shower. I truly thought I was going to die.
