Program notes from Derek Charke:
Water Flows Serpentine muses on the environment of Nova Scotia, and is based on an original poem:
[1. Rain]
the wind is soft
rain gently falls
[2. Tides]
the tides are far and near
waves lap loquaciously
[3. Ocean]
water breaks in all directions
[4. Rivers]
the current is strong
water flows serpentine
Water surrounds the province. The weather can be unpredictable and can change from sun to snow to rain all in a matter of hours. The tides in the Bay of Fundy are enormous and cycle in and out twice a day. Dykes hold back the highest tides. Rivers meander. The rhythm of the seasons is defined by the waterways.
Water Flows Serpentine was commissioned by the Cheng2 Duo with the support of Gaétan Lang, and is Dedicated to Patricia (Pat) Wyman.
Recorded May 8, 2023, Hahn Hall at Music Academy of the West, Santa Barbara
Rainer Crosett, cello
Andrew Zhou, piano
