Why Saudi Arabia’s Patriot and THAAD Defences Face a Houthi Drone Threat

Описание: Saudi Arabia has spent billions of dollars on America’s advanced air defence systems, including Patriot and THAAD. Yet reports of attacks reaching areas near Riyadh have raised serious questions about the country’s ability to defend its cities and critical infrastructure.

The challenge lies in the changing nature of warfare. Iran-backed Houthis reportedly possess a range of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and attack drones, each presenting different detection and interception challenges. Yemen’s mountainous terrain and the possibility of coordinated attacks can further complicate air defence operations. However, the weapon reportedly involved in the Riyadh airport incident remains unclear, and there is no confirmed evidence that Patriot or THAAD failed to intercept it.

The real question is whether even the most advanced air defence systems can keep pace with the evolving economics and tactics of modern warfare.
