Two senior Iranian judges were killed in a shooting attack at the Supreme Court in Tehran on Saturday, according to the judiciary and state media. The assailant, who opened fire on the victims, died by suicide shortly after the attack.

The victims have been identified as Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghiseh, both of whom held the rank of hujjat al-Islam and presided over different branches of the Supreme Court. The judiciary described the slain judges as "courageous and experienced" and noted their significant involvement in combating national security threats, espionage, and terrorism.

Judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir told Iranian state television that an armed assailant entered the judges' office with a handgun and shot both men. Investigations are underway, but the attacker's identity and motive remain unclear. Preliminary findings suggest that the assailant had no previous involvement with the court.

According to the state-owned Tehran Times, a bodyguard for one of the judges was also injured during the attack, which occurred on the first working day of the Iranian week.

President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the attack as a "terrorist and cowardly" act, calling for swift action from security forces. While state-affiliated media reported that some individuals working at the court were detained, the judiciary has not confirmed any arrests.

Razini, 71, had previously survived an assassination attempt in 1998 while serving as head of Tehran's judiciary. Moghiseh, 68, had been sanctioned by the U.S. in 2019 for overseeing controversial trials.

Iran’s judiciary chief, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei, stated that the judges were targeted due to their “decisive” rulings against terrorists responsible for the deaths of Iranians. Ejei added that the judges were despised by "the enemies" because of their work.
