(12 Jul 1994) In an historic move, Germany's highest court ruled on Tuesday
(12/7) that German troops could join international military
missions subject to parliamentary approval. The Constitutional
Court in Karlsruhe rejected suits by the opposition Social
Democrats (SD), who had argued that the use of German troops in U.N.
missions in the former Yugoslavia and Somalia was
unconstitutional. At the same time, the court ruled that the
government had infringed parliament's rights by not consulting it
before sending German troops on missions to monitor UN-imposed
sanctions in the former Yugoslavia.
