Hello everyone, I’m Dr. Pankaj Karan.
Have you ever woken up at night with sudden, severe pain in your big toe, so bad that even a bedsheet hurts?
That classic scenario is often gout—a very painful but highly treatable form of arthritis.
Let’s break it down simply: what gout is, why it happens, how to prevent it, and how it’s treated.
[What Is Gout? – 0:30–1:30]
Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis.
It happens when uric acid levels in the blood become too high.
Uric acid is a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines, which are found in:
Certain foods
And naturally in our own cells
When uric acid builds up, it can form sharp crystals inside joints.
These crystals trigger intense inflammation, leading to:
Sudden pain
Redness
Swelling
Warmth of the joint
📍 Most common joint affected: the big toe, but it can also affect ankles, knees, wrists, elbows, and fingers.
[What Causes Gout? – 1:30–2:45]
Gout happens due to either too much uric acid production or poor elimination by the kidneys.
Common risk factors include:
Diet high in red meat, organ meat, seafood
Sugary drinks and fructose-rich foods
Alcohol, especially beer and liquor
Obesity and metabolic syndrome
Diabetes and high blood pressure
Chronic kidney disease
Certain medications like diuretics (water pills)
👨⚕️ Men are affected more often, and risk increases with age.
In women, gout becomes more common after menopause.
[Symptoms of Gout – 2:45–3:15]
A gout attack often:
Starts suddenly, usually at night
Causes severe joint pain within hours
Joint becomes red, swollen, shiny, and extremely tender
Untreated gout can become:
Recurrent
Lead to joint damage
Cause kidney stones or uric acid deposits called tophi
[Prevention of Gout – 3:15–4:15]
Good news—gout is largely preventable.
Lifestyle prevention tips:
Drink plenty of water
Limit red meat, shellfish, and organ meats
Avoid sugary sodas and fruit juices
Reduce alcohol intake
Maintain healthy body weight
Foods that may help:
Low-fat dairy
Vegetables
Whole grains
Cherries (shown to reduce gout attacks)
🟢 Regular exercise and blood pressure control also reduce risk.
[Treatment of Gout – 4:15–5:00]
Treatment has two goals:
1️⃣ Treat the acute attack
2️⃣ Prevent future attacks
During an acute attack:
NSAIDs (like ibuprofen or naproxen)
Colchicine
Short courses of steroids (if needed)
Long-term prevention (for frequent attacks):
Medications that lower uric acid, such as allopurinol or febuxostat
These are usually long-term medications, taken under medical supervision
⚠️ Never start or stop gout medicines during an acute flare without guidance.
[Closing – Call to Action]
Gout is painful—but very manageable with the right knowledge and treatment.
If you or someone you know has repeated joint pain or swelling, don’t ignore it—early treatment prevents long-term damage.
