Maybe you met someone who is looking for an accountant and you know the perfect person, or perhaps someone is asking for a personal introduction to someone else in your network.

Whether you're playing business matchmaker or someone you know is asking for an introduction to someone else you know, at some point or another you're going to need to send an email introduction.

As someone who sends a lot of email introductions (and has received some truly awful introductions from others), I've put together a simple 5-point guideline for how to send an email introduction that people want to read.

1. Do ask before sending an introduction
2. Do state state your purpose (why you think these people should connect)
3. Do give a brief 2 - 3 sentence bio or background for each person that highlights the benefits of the connection
4. Don't forget to close your email with a call to action
5. Do follow up

Introductions are an opportunity to network and collaborate. Your network is a precious commodity that you've spent a lot of time and effort to curate. Your introductions should bring value to both of the people you introduce. An occasional sales type introductions is okay, but try to avoid them unless one of the people specifically asks for an introduction because they'd like to hire the other person.

Please remember that people are busy or may not want to be introduced to a random stranger. Just because you know they would make a great connection doesn't mean they want to be connected. If you're not sure, err on the side of caution and ask the person before sending the introduction.

Most people will appreciate that you thought of them and took the extra step to make sure they were open to it. -- I don't know how many times someone has "introduced" me to people I already knew. In one case, the other introductee and I were already working on a project.
