A world record was made today at Belfast's Clarendon Dock with the building of the wordl's biggest Meccano structure. A bridge that stretched across the dock. The bridge is 100 feet long had 11,000 pieces of Meccano and weighs in at 600kgs. The bridge over Clarendon Dock was built by a group of third year civil engineering students and school children. It has around 70,000 nuts or bolts.
Meccano was a model construction system created by Frank Hornby in 1898 and billed as "mechanics made easy"
Dr Danny McPolin from the school of planning, architecture and civil engineering, who led the project, said: "In terms of the longer pieces, if they're all laid out end-to-end I think it would be about 3.8 kilometres - approximately 10,000 or 11,000 pieces."
