How do acids and bases react with each other?
Activity 2.6
Main aim of this activity
To study the neutralization reaction between hydrochloric acid and NaOH.
Observation
When sufficient base solution has been added to the acid a permanent pink colour appears.
Conclusion
In the reaction each drop of NaOH solution neutralises HCl solution in the conical flask to produce NaCl and water.
Result
Adding more NaOH solution to the conical flask ( neutral solution )makes the solution basic, due to the release of OH- ions. This changes the colour of phenolphthalein from colourless to pink.
NaOH + HCl-------- NaCl + H2O( reaction one till all HCl has been neutralised)
NaOH + H2O ----- Na+ + Cl
Neutralisation reaction
The reaction between an acid and a base to give a salt and water is known as neutralisation reaction.
Base + Acid -------- Salt + Water
Reaction of metallic oxides with acids
Activity 2.7
Aim of this activity
To study the reaction between copper oxide and hydrochloric acid
Observation
1. Copper oxide is a black solid and HCl is colourless.
2.Black copper oxide dissolve and a blue green solution of copper chloride is formed.
Conclusion
Copper oxide is a basic oxide it react with the hydrochloric acid to give a blue green solution of copper chloride.
Acids react with the metallic oxide to form corresponding salt and water.
Metal oxide + Acid --------- Salt+ Water
for example
Na2O + 2HCl ------- 2NaCl + H2O
CuO+H2SO4 --------CuSO4 + H2O
