Excellent service. The Ah Yi at the front took care of me. was so kind when I talked to her. Costs $3.50 each. Take it or leave it. Wish we could have gotten a full dozen but I got what I needed, a solid 9. It was beautifully crafted, handpicked, and tasted angelic. Waited about 30 minutes to get FaceTime with the Ah Yi who helped put my order in. It was great. No cap.
Was walking around Chinatown for the first time in several years. Every time I'd go, it would ALWAYS be closed. So once I saw a line, I knew I had to wait. I was with the sweetest company. The timing was perfect because right after we bought the egg tarts, it started sprinkling... SO IT WAS AWESOME THAT WE DIDNT WAIT IN LINE WHILE IT WAS RAINING!!!
There isn't much more to say that people haven't already, but these egg tarts are special for a reason! In the 4 years I've lived here, this is the first time that I've passed by and they've been open. The line took about 30 minutes because one person in line ordered ~50 egg tarts. Once they got their order, it went by pretty quick. Cash only.
The egg tarts are extremely flaky and I had to eat one while it was still piping hot. Not too sweet, but perfectly buttery and eggy. For $3.50 I'm not sure if I would get it again, but it was definitely worth trying at least once!
I love their egg tarts. Since I will be crossing the bay bridge soon, I thought I would try calling the number listed on Yelp. To my surprise, someone did pick up the call!!
A nice gentleman said we are sorry that we are closed as we are on vacation. I truly appreciate he picks up the phone!!! He saves me a trip of disappointment.
This place is finally back open!! Walked by on a Friday afternoon - the store looked closed/ boarded up, but there was a tiny door open where a lady was taking orders.
Egg tarts are $3.5 each and $21 for a half dozen. As all the other reviews say, the egg tarts are super flakey and the custard is sooo smooth! This place is cash only and there is a Chase ATM across the street.
The lady at the store said they close 2 days a week, which typically happens between Tuesday to Thursday, but it varies each week. You can call to see if they're open and also order in advance, but it looked like you still need to line up to pick it up.
Happened to walk by on a Sunday afternoon and luckily they were open. After hearing rave reviews, I stood in line and was so glad I did! After 20ish mins, we were able to ordered some egg tarts and a few coconut goodies. Amazing! Steaming hot and fresh AF.
Golden Gate Bakery, home of the BEST and my absolute favorite custard egg tarts since I was a kid, is NOT closed. However, they are not making or selling them right now. Their amazing egg tarts will be back some time in October.
They are currently open and selling mooncakes only for the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. They are offering these different mooncakes with and without yolks:
White lotus
Lotus
Mixed nuts w/ ham
Almond
Wintermelon
Coconut
Black bean
Taro
Pineapple
Date
Black sesame
Update 10/5/22: Golden Gate Bakery is open and selling their incredible custard egg tarts again! Prices have gone up and egg tarts are now $3.50/each or $42/dozen. Be prepared to wait in line and remember that it's cash only. It's still so worth the wait and price because they make the best egg tarts ever!
Stumbled upon this place being open while making my way through Chinatown and picked up some egg tarts ($3.50) to try. Without the line out front I would have waltzed right past this place because it's a small opening to the bakery. I've heard good things about this place and I'd say it lived up to my expectations. The egg tart came out piping hot and it was delicious. The crust was nice and flaky and the custard was soft but not runny.
They were FINALLY open when we went on 10/8/22!!! It's been 3.5 years since we last caught them open and I was so happy to see them running again. The egg tarts are to die for. We got some egg tarts for $1.50 at a bakery up the street to compare the taste of the two and these were 1000x better. The custard is warm and perfectly cooked and the crust is so flaky and good. The price went up to $3.50 each (or $42 per dozen) so pretty pricey but worth it imo. Be sure to bring cash because it's cash only. There's also usually a line outside but it's always worth the wait. Definitely the place to go for egg tarts!!
