Step back in time to the 12th century as we explore one of the most unique architectural sites in Karnataka - the Mosale Temples.
Located just 14km from Hassan, the village of Mosale houses two stunning examples of Hoysala architecture standing side-by-side: the Nageshwara and Chennakeshava temples.
In this video, we take a detailed walk-through of these "Twin Temples," known for their identical size, symmetry, and intricate stone carvings.
In this video:
The Nageshwara Temple (Shaivism): We begin our journey at the Nageshwara temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Notice the incredible precision of the soapstone carvings. The temple features a Vimana (tower), a Sukanasi (vestibule), and a Navaranga (hall). Look closely at the ceiling panels and the guardian deities at the entrance.
The Chennakeshava Temple (Vaishnavism):
Just a few feet away sits the equally magnificent Chennakeshava temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Despite being built at the same time (approx. 1200 AD), the iconography here shifts to depict the various avatars of Vishnu. The wall images of Saraswati, Durga, and various musicians are a testament to the mastery of Hoysala sculptors.
Why are these temples unique?
Unlike the massive complexes of Belur and Halebidu, the Mosale temples offer a serene, intimate look at Hoysala art. They are built in the Ekakuta (single shrine) style and are famous for their "twin" appearance, representing the harmony between the followers of Shiva and Vishnu during that era.
📍 Location: Mosale, Hassan District, Karnataka, India.
