Acute Pancreatitis: Specific Lab Tests
Serum Amylase: Elevated, typically 3 times the upper limit of normal.
Serum Lipase: Elevated
In a few cases of acute pancreatitis, Serum amylase and lipase levels can be normal.
Normal Pancreas:
AP Diameter: Head (Less than 3 cm), Body (Less than 2.5 cm), Tail (Less than 2 cm) approximately
Pancreatic Duct diameter: Less than 3 mm
Hypoechoic in younger patients
Echogenicity increases with increasing age
Acute Pancreatitis:
Enlarged pancreas
Echogenicity may be normal in some cases
Peripancreatic fluid: Hypoechoic fluid outside the pancreas
Hyperechoic inflammatory fat
Irregular/ill defined pancreatic margins
