What is Motion-Synchronized Radiation Therapy?
Even when you are lying as still as possible on the outside, which is typically necessary for radiation treatments, on the inside your body is in constant motion.
Your heart is beating. You are breathing. Your digestive system is processing food. Your blood is flowing. Your bladder is filling.
And since your body is moving internally, if you need radiation for cancer or another medical condition that requires radiation, you want to choose a radiation treatment that moves with your body.
In other words, you want to choose Motion-Synchronized Radiation Therapy (MSRT) – radiation that targets the tumor with less damage to healthy tissue because it moves with your body.
Motion-Synchronized Radiation Therapy: The CyberKnife Advantage
One of the most precise forms of MSRT is CyberKnife, “the only device designed to accommodate all forms of patient and tumor movement,” according to Accuray, the maker of CyberKnife.
CyberKnife uses a robotic radiation system coupled with real-time image guidance to move around a patient “to deliver radiation doses from potentially thousands of unique beam angles, significantly expanding the possible positions to concentrate radiation to the tumor while minimizing the dose to surrounding healthy tissue,” says Accuray.
CyberKnife technology enables smaller treatment margins around a tumor to minimize exposure to healthy tissue. With CyberKnife, patients often need a shorter course of treatment than with traditional radiation because MSRT is targeted radiation.
Accuray likens treatment with CyberKnife’s motion synchronization to a faucet filling a glass of water. With traditional radiation, the faucet and the glass of water are both fixed, or only one of the two is moving so water can splash outside the glass. Now imagine if the glass and the faucet move in sync with one another. The result is accuracy, precision and efficiency.
“The patient could change their position or move their head, even slightly. The patient could cough. Muscles tense and relax. The CyberKnife System is the only device designed to accommodate all forms of patient and tumor motion, while the treatment is being delivered. With its motion adaptive delivery technology, the CyberKnife System enables smaller treatment margins around the tumor, minimizing the amount of healthy tissue exposed to high-dose radiation,” says Accuray.
Cancer Treatment at CyberKnife Miami
“CyberKnife is the most advanced radiosurgery technique available for the treatment of cancerous and non-cancerous lesions and tumors throughout the body,” according to the experts at the CyberKnife Center of Miami.
At CyberKnife Miami, we treat cancer and other medical issues requiring radiation including spine, brain, lung, kidney, pancreas, liver, prostate and head and neck tumors.
We also treat lymphoma and other conditions where radiation treatment may be necessary. We even tackle hard-to-treat cancers for patients who have been turned away from other centers because of our expertise with CyberKnife.
CyberKnife has been used for more than two decades and studied in clinical trials for 30 years. It has helped hundreds of thousands of patients – even patients who were told they couldn’t have more radiation, or their tumors were inoperable. It’s non-invasive, and for most patients, there is little downtime.
The experts at Cyberknife Miami see the CyberKnife advantage every day.
We opened our doors 23 years ago. We were the first CyberKnife center to open in the Southeast. And we’re here to help you.
Our doctors and staff are experts in the field. Our compassion and personalized treatment can be the difference you need when it comes to treating your cancer.
