The movie Excalibur (1981), directed by John Boorman, is a dramatic, stylized retelling of the Arthurian legend, focusing on the mystical and tragic rise and fall of King Arthur, the knights of the Round Table, and the legendary sword Excalibur.
The film begins with the wizard Merlin aiding Uther Pendragon in his quest to become king. After Uther's death, Merlin takes his son, Arthur, and hides him until the time is right. Years later, Arthur pulls the sword Excalibur from the stone, proving his right to rule.
