To smuggle himself into Rosina's quarters, Count Almaviva has disguised himself as a substitute music teacher, ready to lead the day's singing lesson. Of course, Rosina sees through the disguise instantly: The count is her lover, after all.
But they have to keep up the charade, so that Rosina's guardian Doctor Bartolo doesn't catch the count and throw him out. So Count Almaviva sits down at the piano and plays theatrically, as Rosina sings through her sheet music: a maudlin song about love that she punctuates with cheeky glances at Almaviva.
Mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack and tenor Alek Shrader — a couple off stage as well as on — bring off-the-charts chemistry to the roles of Rosina and Almaviva in "The Barber of Seville," a topsy-turvy new production from director Matthew Ozawa. Here, they perform the duet "Contro un Cor" or "Against a Heart."
"The Barber of Seville" is live at Marin Center's drive-in theater, now through May 15, 2021: sfopera.com/barber #BarberOfMarin
